Editorial Standards
How we report, verify, and deliver information.
Our Approach
NB NOW exists to serve the public interest. Every editorial decision we make begins with a single question: does this help our readers understand what is happening in their communities?
We do not chase volume. We pursue clarity. Our reporting prioritizes depth over speed, context over reaction, and accuracy over novelty. When a story requires weeks of investigation, we take weeks.
This commitment shapes everything — from the topics we select to the way we structure a single sentence. Journalism is not content. It is a public service, and we treat it accordingly.
Verification Process
No story is published without independent verification. Our editorial process is built around a set of non-negotiable standards that apply to every piece — regardless of format, length, or platform.
- Every factual claim must be confirmed by at least two independent sources before publication.
- Documents, data sets, and official records are reviewed in their original form whenever possible — not through intermediaries.
- When a claim cannot be fully verified, we say so explicitly. Uncertainty is disclosed, never concealed.
Our editors review every story for factual accuracy, logical coherence, and fairness before it reaches readers. This process is not optional — it is the foundation of everything we publish.
Sources and Attribution
Transparency about where information comes from is central to credible journalism. We identify our sources by name and affiliation whenever it is safe and appropriate to do so.
When anonymity is granted, it is not done lightly. Anonymous sourcing requires approval from a senior editor and is used only when the information is of clear public importance and cannot be obtained any other way. The reason for anonymity is stated in the story.
We do not use unnamed sources to inject opinion, speculation, or unverified claims into our reporting. Attribution exists to protect readers, not to protect journalists.
Independence and Ethics
NB NOW operates independently of any political party, government body, corporate interest, or advocacy organization. Our editorial decisions are made solely by our newsroom leadership. No external entity has influence over what we cover or how we cover it.
Our journalists do not accept gifts, favours, or compensation from sources or subjects of coverage. They do not engage in public political advocacy. These are not guidelines — they are conditions of employment.
When potential conflicts of interest arise, they are disclosed to the editor-in-chief and, when relevant, to the reader. We believe trust is built through restraint, not through performance.
Corrections
We will make errors. What matters is how we respond to them. When a factual mistake is identified — by our team or by a reader — we correct it promptly, clearly, and publicly.
Corrections are appended to the original story with a description of what changed and when. We do not silently edit published work. If a correction is significant enough to alter the meaning of a story, we note that at the top of the article.
To report an error, contact corrections@nbnow.com. Every submission is reviewed by a senior editor.
Bilingual Responsibility
Language is not a feature of our newsroom — it is a structural commitment. Every story published by NB NOW is made available in both English and French, with independent editorial oversight applied to each version.
This is not translation in the conventional sense. Each language edition is shaped by editors who understand the cultural context, idiomatic norms, and reader expectations specific to that audience. A story in French is not a copy of the English version — it is its own editorial product.
We believe that serving a bilingual community means more than offering two languages. It means respecting the distinct perspectives and information needs that each language community brings to public life.
