The transportation company Uber announced the launch of a new feature in its application in the United States. This feature will allow female passengers and female drivers to be paired with each other during trips. Additionally, the measure seeks to address safety concerns within the transportation platform.

The tool, which was initially tested in a pilot program, will now begin to be implemented nationwide. Furthermore, female drivers will also be able to prioritize receiving requests from female passengers.

However, the expansion of the system occurs amidst a class-action lawsuit filed in California by some of the platform’s drivers, who claim that the policy could be discriminatory toward men.

A similar situation is faced by rival company Lyft, which was also sued for alleged discrimination after introducing a similar feature in 2024. This feature allows for the preferential connection of female drivers and female passengers.

Both companies maintain that these initiatives seek to improve safety and provide more options to the users of their transportation applications.
